The Washington County Health Department in Hagerstown, Maryland is actively working to promote Let’s Move! Child Care (LMCC) best practices among Head Start, faith-based, and private child care centers. Two providers—Rehoboth Learning Center and Hagerstown Community College Children’s Learning Center—have been particularly proactive in meeting the goals outlined in their action plans and successfully created healthier environments to help the children in their care thrive.

Across the country, families, communities, schools, businesses and organizations are working to move our nation toward a healthier new norm, and studies are showing that their efforts are paying off. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced that obesity rates for preschool age children have declined by 43% over the past decade. This is great news!

Since the launch of Let’s Move! in 2010, the initiative, along with the dedicated efforts made by families, communities, schools, businesses, and organizations, has helped move our nation in a healthier direction. The fourth anniversary of Let’s Move! marks a time when even more Americans have access to healthy, affordable food, school health environments are changing, healthier foods are being marketed to kids, and making healthy choices is becoming easier for families. This healthier movement is becoming the new norm for our country.

Last week, the First Lady kicked off the celebration of the fourth anniversary of Let’s Move! on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." To demonstrate the national scope of all the great work happening around the country, the First Lady encouraged people of all ages to show her how they move through eating more fruits and vegetables, getting physically active, or making healthy changes like planting a community garden. She asked you to Facebook it, Tweet it, and Instagram it using #LetsMove, and she told viewers that if enough people participated, the President and the Vice President would show us how they move.

This week, First Lady Michelle Obama visited a local child care center to highlight the progress of Let’s Move! Child Care and recognize a new child care provider signing on to support the program. Since launching in 2011, over 12,000 providers have committed to fostering healthy environments and instilling healthy habits among our nation’s preschoolers that will last a lifetime. Through Let’s Move! Child Care, providers are increasing physical activity, limiting screen time, serving healthier food and beverages, and supporting breastfeeding mothers. More than 1 million children are being reached by early childhood education networks that have committed to Let’s Move! Child Care.

Continuing the celebration of the fourth anniversary of Let’s Move!, the First Lady traveled to Miami to visit a parks and recreation center to highlight a new announcement around healthy out-of-school time programs. In a commitment to the Partnership for a Healthier America, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America will work to create healthy environments for their out-of-school time programs.
