Four Years on the Move to a Healthier Nation: Let’s Move! Anniversary Highlights

Since the launch of Let’s Move! in 2010, the initiative, along with the dedicated efforts made by families, communities, schools, businesses, and organizations, has helped move our nation in a healthier direction. The fourth anniversary of Let’s Move! marks a time when even more Americans have access to healthy, affordable food, school health environments are changing, healthier foods are being marketed to kids, and making healthy choices is becoming easier for families. This healthier movement is becoming the new norm for our country.

Last week, we celebrated the fourth anniversary of Let’s Move! with a series of exciting announcements and events. In case you missed it, check out the highlights from the week below.

First Lady Joins Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show

First Lady Michelle Obama joined Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show to kick off the celebration of the fourth anniversary of Let’s Move!. In order to celebrate the great work taking place across the country to move our nation in a healthier direction, the First Lady encouraged people of all ages to show her how they move to be healthy. Mrs. Obama asked everyone to share photos and videos of their everyday fitness routine, the better food choices they are making, and what they are doing to move their communities to be healthy on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using #LetsMove.

Check out the incredible response to the First Lady’s call to action, and thanks to the great participation, the President and the Vice President showed America how they move.

Transforming the School Health Environment Nationwide

The First Lady was joined by U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack at the White House to announce proposed guidelines for comprehensive school wellness policies to help build healthier learning environments for students across the country. These policies also put in place a guideline on food marketing in schools, setting a standard that if an item cannot be sold or served in schools, it cannot be marketed to kids in schools.

In addition, Mrs. Obama announced the expansion of the school breakfast program, which will enable nearly nine million kids in 22,000 schools to start their day with a nutritious breakfast. These policies will help ensure that the hard work parents are doing at home to teach their kids healthy habits will not be undone during the school day.

Creating Healthier Out-of-School Time Environments

Following the school wellness announcement, the First Lady traveled to Miami, Florida to visit a parks and recreation center to highlight a new announcement around healthy out-of-school time programs. The Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the National Recreation and Park Association committed to the Partnership for a Healthier America to adopt guidelines that will create healthier out-of-school environments for 5 million kids. The First Lady joined kids at the center and a few special guests to check out some of the activities that are offered, including indoor golf, yoga, and Zumba.

Making Healthy Eating the Easy Choice

The First Lady was joined by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Margaret Hamburg at the White House to announce proposed updates to the Nutrition Facts label, which is on over 700,000 products that you find in your local grocery store. In addition to being redesigned to highlight key parts of the label, such as calories and serving sizes, the proposed label also updates serving sizes to match how much people really eat and requires information about the amount of “added sugars” in a food product.

Instilling Healthy Habits Early On

To wrap up the anniversary celebration, the First Lady visited a local child care center to highlight the progress of Let’s Move! Child Care and announce that Learning Care Group, the second-largest for-profit child care provider in the country, has committed to the Partnership for a Healthier America to implement policies aligned with Let’s Move! Child Care that will help provide up to 100,000 kids with a healthy child care environment. During her visit to the center, the First Lady and the kids were joined by Super Sprowtz life-size veggie characters for a few dances and a healthy snack.

In addition to this announcement, there was other positive news for this age group last week. The CDC released a report showing a forty-three percent drop in the obesity rate among children ages two to five over the past decade.

It was an incredible week, and we want to thank everyone for joining in our celebration. Although we have come a long way, now is the time we need to double down on our efforts to ensure that we continue to see progress. We look forward to continuing to move our nation to a healthier future together.
