“Young people are happier and healthier when they experience the outdoors regularly,” said Reclamation Commissioner Michael Connor. The Bureau of Reclamation and the Catch a Special Thrill Foundation (C.A.S.T.) put on a series of fishing events for disabled children and their families so they can do just that - experience America’s great outdoors and have fun.
As children across the country begin a new school year, First Lady Michelle Obama kicked off the next phase of Let’s Move! – her initiative to solve the problem of childhood obesity in a generation – focusing today on improving children’s nutrition and physical fitness.

Ending childhood obesity within a generation is the central goal of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative. We know achieving this goal requires all of us to work together – parents, teachers, schools, chefs, community leaders, Federal, State and local elected officials and our children – there’s a role for each of us to play.
Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, affecting children across the nation and changing country’s overall health and wellness. Building on the momentum of the Let’s Move! campaign and highlighting the steps that individuals, families and communities can take to address this issue, President Obama recently issued a proclamation making September 2010 National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month.

Obesity puts people at greater risk for heart disease, strokes, and diabetes, among other serious health problems. But experience has shown that educating parents and children about nutrition can empower them make healthier choices about the food they consume, and help prevent them from suffering serious health problems. That’s why the FDA, alongside the First Lady and the Let’s Move! initiative, is committed to helping consumers get the information they need to make healthier choices.

This summer, hundreds of local DC children have been invited to the White House as part of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! South Lawn Series—an event that focuses on educating and engaging children and their parents with creative, fun and easy ways to be healthy. The series is one of many programs included in First Lady’s comprehensive, community-oriented campaign to combat the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.
Yesterday the First Lady released statement recognizing the Senate’s passage of the Child Nutrition Bill. This bipartisan legislation will bring fundamental changes to schools and improve the food options available to our children.

A little over one week remains in the Apps for Healthy Kids voting period, and so far, over 11,500 votes have been tallied. In addition, support for the initiative continues to amplify, with the number of supporters reaching nearly 30,000! Today, I had the honor of being awarded a Let's Move Outside Junior Ranger badge by four of our interns working with the National Park Service's Rivers & Trails Program. This summer, these young people are serving as Let’s Move Outside ambassadors for the National Park Service, engaging hundreds of elementary and middle school children in a range of healthy, outdoor activities at five different locations across the Northeastern United States.
