The Year in Review: Our Top 10 Favorite Let’s Move! Moments of 2015

What an incredible year! Throughout 2015, we highlighted the fifth anniversary of Let’s Move! by celebrating the progress in helping kids and families lead healthier lives, challenging each other to do more to support our kids’ health, and committing to champion this issue into the future.

From the First Lady sharing her workout routine to hosting the first-ever White House Campout, it was a thrilling and productive year!

We wanted to share with you our top ten favorite moments of 2015. In no particular order, check them out below:

1) The #GimmeFive challenge

The First Lady challenged everyone to #GimmeFive things they are doing to eat better, be more active, and lead a healthier life. People from across the country joined in the challenge – from kids, families, and schools to celebrities and athletes, like Beyonce, Dwyane Wade, Jack Johnson and so many others.

Even Ellen DeGeneres got in on the fun when the First Lady challenged her to learn the #GimmeFive dance. The So You Think You Can Dance All Stars then joined the First Lady at the White House Easter Egg Roll to perform the dance live on the South Lawn.

And of course, how could we ever forget when the First Lady shared her workout routine after the President challenged her to #GimmeFive FLOTUS-style.

2) Billy Eichner and Big Bird joining the First Lady to encourage kids to eat brighter!

Through the eat brighter! campaign, the Produce Marketing Association’s (PMA) community of growers, suppliers, and retailers are able to utilize the strength and influence of Sesame Street characters, without a licensing fee, to promote fruits and vegetables. This year, Billy Eichner and Big Bird teamed up with the First Lady to help spread the eat brighter! message through some trivia in the produce section of a grocery store. The video of Mrs. Obama, Billy, and Big Bird was even nominated for an Emmy!

And best of all, PMA reported an increase in fruit and vegetable sales this year from participation in eat brighter!

3) Planting and harvesting the White House Kitchen Garden

Students participating in Let’s Move! programs across the country and from local schools joined the First Lady to plant and harvest the White House Kitchen Garden this year.

In an effort to help schools all across the country have access to a similar garden experience, and to be able to explore the White House Kitchen Garden, Google joined the First Lady at the fall harvest to create the first ever virtual tour of the garden. Through their new program, Expeditions, students across the nation will be able to experience the garden, learn about where food comes from, and the importance of healthy eating. Stay tuned for the tour to go live!

4) The First Lady leading the Presidential Delegation to the Milan Expo

With the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life,” the Expo promoted a global dialogue about the future of our food system. The First Lady and the Presidential Delegation were proud to share the lessons learned from Let’s Move! and the efforts happening in the United States to support healthier lifestyles while eagerly learning from other countries’ leaders about how they are addressing the issue of childhood obesity and raising healthier families.

5) Hosting the first-ever White House campout

The First Lady invited 50 Girl Scouts to participate in the first-ever campout on the South Lawn to celebrate the centennial of the National Park Service and promote getting kids and families moving while taking advantage of America’s great outdoors as part of Let’s Move! Outside.

6) Kid chefs at the White House for the Kids’ “State Dinner”

The First Lady welcomed 55 talented young chefs to the White House for the fourth annual Kids’ “State Dinner.” It was just like any other state dinner, complete with beautiful décor and White House china, except the guests of honor were kids! In order to claim their spot at the White House for the event, kids had to submit an original recipe that was healthy, affordable, and delicious, and a winning recipe was selected from each state and U.S. territory.

7) Launching a new interactive Let’s Move! map

In the spring, the First Lady launched a new interactive Let’s Move! map so folks can now easily find out what Let’s Move! programs are happening in their communities. The map also allows people to learn more about each Let’s Move! program and how to initiate a program in their community.

Over the last five years, we have seen incredible participation in Let’s Move!. To date, 1.6 million kids are now attending healthier daycare centers through Let’s Move! Child Care; 2 million kids now have a Let’s Move! Salad Bar in their school; and nearly nine million kids now attend Let’s Move! Active Schools where they work to get 60 minutes of physical activity a day.

8) Jimmy Fallon and the First Lady showing the Evolution of Mom Dancing, Part 2

The First Lady teamed up with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show to celebrate the anniversary of Let’s Move! and to have a little fun, of course. Two years ago, the First Lady and Jimmy Fallon first showcased the Evolution of Mom Dancing, and this year it was time for Part 2

9) The First Lady joining Team FNV

FNV, short for “fruits and vegetables,” is a national brand focused on increasing fruit and vegetable consumption and sales, led by the Partnership for a Healthier America and a collaboration of companies, celebrities, athletes, and foundations. Launched earlier this year, the First Lady officially announced recently that she was joining Team FNV, which already includes celebrities and athletes, like Steph Curry, Cam Newton, Jessica Alba, Jordin Sparks and many others, promoting fruits and veggies.

10) Announcing nearly 1 in 4 Americans now live in a Let’s Move! City, Town or County

This fall, the First Lady announced that there are now 500 communities across the country participating in Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties, impacting nearly 80 million Americans. These communities are increasing opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating for their residents, creating environments where kids can walk to school on new sidewalks, participate in a summer meal program, or join a local athletic league.

It truly was a memorable year.
