The First Lady Joins Team FNV!

“When you turn on the TV or go online, you hardly ever see any really cool ads for fruits and vegetables. Instead every year, the average kid in this country sees more than 5,500 TV ads for unhealthy foods and just 100 ads for foods like fruits and vegetables,” Mrs. Obama said. “We all know that advertising works. We know that those commercials influence almost everything we do, the clothes we buy, the foods we eat and so much more. So we figured why shouldn’t fruits and vegetables get in on a little bit of the action?”

Showcasing how we can leverage the power of marketing for healthy products, the First Lady participated in FNV Live! in Norfolk, Virginia last week. Jordin Sparks, Gabrielle Union, Ashanti, Estelle, Jessica Alba and more shared their love for fruits and vegetables with incredible musical performances and creative stunts and challenges led by some of the nation’s top social media creators from Whistle Sports Network.

Responding to an energetic crowd of local students, the First Lady announced that she was officially joining Team FNV. FNV, short for “fruits and vegetables,” is a national brand focused on increasing fruit and vegetable consumption and sales, led by the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) and a collaboration of companies, celebrities, athletes, and foundations. Launched earlier this year, FNV is currently concentrating on two lead markets – Fresno, CA and Hampton Roads, VA – where FNV marketing has been prevalent, from grocery stores to sports venues. Norfolk is part of the Hampton Roads market.

Earlier this year, the First Lady discussed FNV on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and this summer participated in a skit for Jimmy Kimmel Live! as part of the FNV marketing campaign.

Following her remarks at FNV Live!, the First Lady helped kick off the Supermarket Showdown challenge. Jessica Alba and Jordin Sparks each lead a team of celebrities and athletes in answering fruit and veggie related trivia questions and weaving supermarket carts through a cone course to pick up the correct fruit or veggie. In the end, Team Sparks took the win, but both teams came together for an epic selfie, all in support of fruits and veggies.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to join athletes and celebrities like Cam Newtown, Serena Williams, Steph Curry, Kristen Bell, Nick Jonas, and everyone who participated in FNV Live! by signing up for Team FNV! Make sure to follow along online using #TeamFNV.
