Apps for Healthy Kids: All Hands on Deck to End Childhood Obesity
Thank you for your participation! By the time the Apps for Healthy Kids competition submission period closed last week, we had 160 submissions in hand and nearly 20,000 supporters. Now we are reviewing all submissions for eligibility and will have them all up on the www.appsforhealthykids.com website and ready to view by July 14th. Our intention through this endeavor was to inspire software developers, game designers, and students from across the United States to develop fun and engaging tools to inspire and empower children to eat better and be more physically active. We are very excited to have received your many creative submissions, and equally excited to transition now to the voting phase of the competition.

National Park Junior Rangers on the Move
Beginning today, national parks will play a new role in First Lady Michelle Obama's campaign to combat childhood obesity. Kids can now become Let's Move Outside Junior Rangers by participating in an outdoor activity that gets their hearts pumping and bodies moving. The Junior Ranger program, available in more than 200 national parks, rewards young people with a certificate and patch or badge for completing a series of fun, educational activities related to each park's unique resources. Now, kids who participate in healthy recreation as part of this requirement will also receive a Let's Move Outside sticker.

We are, however, keenly aware that summer is also the time when the healthy habits and knowledge that our children developed during the school year are most likely to stall.
Let's Move Outside! at Red Rock Canyon
Yesterday, I was fortunate to join First Lady Michelle Obama, Representative Dina Titus and Senator Harry Reid at the launch of Let's Move Outside! in the spectacular Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area of Southern Nevada. The Canyon is just a short drive from the bustle of the Las Vegas Strip; this 197,000 acre property takes you to another time and with its solitude, wide open vistas and soaring red sandstone cliffs. Red Rock Canyon is one of only sixteen National Landscape Conservation Areas in the country, managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
Student Reporter Asks Tough Questions About Improving School Meals
Reading a Scholastic book, or attending a Scholastic book fair are both rites of passage equal in importance to the first day you walked to school by yourself, or the first time dividing fractions finally made sense. A long-standing tradition within the book-savvy crowd is the Scholastic Kid Press Corps, a group of adolescents eager to be on the front lines of reporting well before they hit their teen years. One of these kids is Jonas Hosmer.
Mrs. Obama Kicks Off the South Lawn Series
On May 25, the First Lady welcomed nearly 100 local students to the White House to kick off the South Lawn Series - events throughout the summer season to bring local children, sports leagues, community programs and coaches to the South Lawn to participate in sports, games and activities.
Easter Egg Roll Ticket Distribution for Schools in D.C. Area
"Who wants to go to the Easter Egg Roll at the White House?" drew scores of raised hands, cheers and applause from 2nd grade students who joined Education Secretary Arne Duncan, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty, Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee and State Superintendent of Education Kerri Briggs at J.O. Wilson Elementary School in D.C. earlier today.
Paralympic Games Show All Athletes Can Be Champions
Today, the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games open in Vancouver and celebrate spirit in motion. Athletes with disabilities from around the world will meet to compete, inspiring and exciting the world with their performances always moving forward and never giving up. These athletes remind us that when we work hard, we can achieve our dreams. We can all be sports champions.
