Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs)

Five simple steps to success for registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs)

As nutrition experts, Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) are essential to helping children and families make positive changes to their eating habits. For example, RDNs can:

  • Help school administrators revise school wellness policies or lead school wellness councils
  • Help school food service directors make menu changes that meet USDA HealthierUS School Challenge criteria
  • Can present a nutrition lesson with a food tasting for parents at a local physician’s office
  • Offer a worksite wellness program at a community center.

Inspired by First Lady Michelle Obama’s call-to-action to health care professionals to address childhood obesity, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics launched Kids Eat Right, a campaign encouraging its members to volunteer to make changes in their communities to positively affect children and families’ eating habits. There are five different actions: school change, community outreach, worksite wellness, influencing policy, and media outreach. You can select from a variety of actions and access helpful resources for each one. Check out www.KidsEatRight.org to sign up.

RDNs can offer their expertise to many people in the community in different sectors and levels. RDNs have the knowledge and skills to help drive changes in schools, communities, worksites, policy, and media.
