Change Is Happening in Mississippi

First Lady Michelle Obama visited Clinton, Mississippi today to highlight the progress made across the state to decrease childhood obesity. From elementary schools all the way to the state capitol, people are stepping up and working together for the health of our kids. So what is Mississippi's secret to success?

An Outdoor Learning Center for Kids

Sometimes a passionate community is all it takes to make change really happen. Just take a look at how far Fireside Elementary School in Louisville, Colorado has come since 2007. Like other schools around the country, Fireside Elementary School wanted to teach kids about healthy eating. Despite being under tight financial means, the school was able to improve school meals, thanks to the Boulder Valley’s School Food Project, which rallied members within the community around this important cause to raise money for all schools within the Boulder district, including Fireside Elementary. A group of parents also volunteered their time to help build a school garden.

New Hampshire Puts Let's Move into Practice

First Lady Michelle Obama last week visited New Hampshire where she applauded that state's great work in making healthier kids a priority and recognized their success at tailoring the Let’s Move! goals to meet community-specific needs.

Mrs. Obama stressed that programs encouraging kids to stay active before and after school and to take part in growing their own fruits and vegetables in a community center garden are demonstrate exactly how Let's Move! can and should work on the ground:

Holiday Celebrations are “On the Menu”

With the winter holidays right around the corner, now is the perfect time to start planning healthy, active, and fun holiday celebrations. Let’s Move!Child Care (LMCC) is encouraging providers to change the way they think about how food is offered and emphasized in child care settings. Many cultures—including mainstream American—celebrate with food, and eating together can foster social bonds. Healthy food should be celebrated! In fact, with a little creativity, your next holiday party can incorporate the same healthy principles that you follow the other times of the year.
