The First Lady Launches Let’s Move Faith and Communities
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of joining First Lady Michelle Obama as she launched the newest effort within the Let’s Move! initiative, Let’s Move Faith and Communities. Let’s Move! is the First Lady’s initiative to solve the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation. We launched this special effort in a conference call with over 4,500 people, including faith-based and community leaders representing more than 50 organizations that have already committed to Let’s Move Faith and Communities.
Bring on the Veggies
First Lady Michelle Obama visited Riverside Elementary in Miami, Florida last week to announce Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools, a collaboration with the Fruit and Vegetable Alliance, the Food, Family and Farming Foundation and the United Fresh Produce Association to bring 6000 salad bars to schools over the next three years.
Let’s Move Newark!
In late October, Mayor Corey Booker announced Let’s Move Newark! a city-wide effort to bring together business, non-profits, schools, and health care groups to develop a plan to combat childhood obesity by 2030. The Mayor recommended that the First Lady visit a local school that is using innovating programs to get students eating healthier and getting more exercise.
“Healthy Foods Here” in Seattle
Before this summer, Seattle’s High Point neighborhood had limited access to healthy food. Fresh fruits and vegetables were particularly hard for residents of this mixed income neighborhood to find close to home. In July, an organization of High Point residents decided to take action.
Success Story: "Mother Of Many" Partners With Los Angeles High Schools
It all began in 2008 when I saw how much fun students from Dorsey High School’s Culinary Arts Program had preparing healthy meals for election volunteers. As the founder and Executive Director of the non‐profit educational organization, Mother Of Many (M.O.M.), I decided to partner with Dorsey’s culinary instructor Erevetta Marzette in 2009 and created the student‐produced “Cooking Live With Dorsey High,” a WebTV healthy food series. Inspiring a move towards healthy cooking and eating seemed completely possible within one school. I never imagined, however, that Cooking Live with Dorsey High would bring rival high schools together in the spirit of “healthy eating!”
Colorado Proud Day
On September 8th, twenty-three chefs made their way to nearly as many Denver schools to work with students in school gardens and in school cafeterias.
Nutrition Tip: Portion Control is Key
Portion control is one of the keys to healthy eating. So, teach your kids about the relationship between serving sizes and calories.
The First Lady’s Fall 2010 Kitchen Garden Harvest
The rain stopped and the sun came out just in time for the First Lady’s Fall 2010 Kitchen Garden Harvest. Joined by more than 25 students from Washington, DC’s Bancroft and Tubman Elementary Schools, the First Lady and several world-renowned chefs spent the afternoon in the White House garden digging up sweet potatoes, clipping herbs, picking tomatoes, and admiring the pumpkins before sitting down to enjoy a fresh salad from the garden.
Nutrition Tip: Pack a Healthy Lunch
No matter what you pack in your children’s lunches, you’ll score an ‘A’ if you do three things: As a parent, practice healthful eating yourself, involve your kids in food shopping and meal preparation, and enjoy at least one meal a day with your kids.
Nutrition Tip: Start the Day Right With a Nutritious Breakfast
A quick breakfast can be healthy if you look at it as the first piece of that day’s nutrition puzzle. Hot and cold breakfast cereals are fast and easy. Pair a bowl of oatmeal or cereal with low fat milk and banana slices or blueberries, and you’ve gotten the day off to a pretty good start.
