Champions of Change Get Their Communities Moving

Today, the White House honored twelve Americans who are who are living the goals of Let’s Move! everyday as Champions of Change. Each of the invitees is an example of what First Lady Michelle Obama called the founding purpose of Let’s Move! – community leaders, teachers and health professsionals who have found creative ways to keep our children active and healthy and get their communities moving!

During the event, the Champions each talked about the program they developed or introduced to their community and together they spoke about how small changes can yield tremendous wins in the lives of their students, area children and families.

A Call to Action: Let's Move!

Ed note: Former WNBA player and four-time Olympic champion Lisa Leslie joined First Lady Michelle Obama and Samantha Cameron, wife of British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Washington, D.C., area children in a mini-Olympics competition to celebrate the 2012 London Summer Olympics and the “Let’s Move!” initiative. The First Lady will lead the Presidential Delegation to the Opening Ceremonies of the Games.

When I was contacted to participate in the First Lady’s Let's Move initiative, I was thrilled! It was just as much of an honor to have the opportunity to introduce Michelle Obama as it was to represent our country in the Olympics.

I also had the pleasure of meeting and introducing Samantha Cameron, the Prime Minister's wife of the United Kingdom. This summer, she will welcome people from all over the world to her country for the Summer Olympic Games.

Kansas City Teen Finds Confidence and Leadership Through Healthy Choices

Brionna Williams of Kansas City understands the nation’s childhood obesity problem. She lived it.

As a middle school student, Brionna tipped the scales at more than 350 pounds. She longed to play sports, but running the length of a basketball court left her gasping for breath.

Holiday Celebrations are “On the Menu”

With the winter holidays right around the corner, now is the perfect time to start planning healthy, active, and fun holiday celebrations. Let’s Move!Child Care (LMCC) is encouraging providers to change the way they think about how food is offered and emphasized in child care settings. Many cultures—including mainstream American—celebrate with food, and eating together can foster social bonds. Healthy food should be celebrated! In fact, with a little creativity, your next holiday party can incorporate the same healthy principles that you follow the other times of the year.

Earlier this week, First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed schools that met the First Lady’s goal to double the number of participants in the HealthierUS School Challenge in a year to the White House to celebrate their achievement.

Given that many children eat as many as two meals a day at school, it’s pretty clear that schools have a vital role to play if we’re going to combat the disturbing rise in childhood obesity we’ve seen in recent years. Just as clear is that schools participating in USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge honored at the White House this week demonstrate the kind of deep commitment needed to create and maintain a healthy school environment. These schools are leaders that set an example for schools across the country.

Jumping Jacks are Fun - and Free!

On October 11 at precisely 3 pm, First Lady Michelle Obama kicked off the National Geographic Kids challenge to break the world record for the most people doing jumping jacks in a 24 hour period. Accompanied by local school children, the First Lady took to the South Lawn and led the children in an exercise that does everything the experts say we need to do to keep our kids healthy and fit. And best of all - the kids didn't need equipment, just enthusiasm!
