Like all members of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, I care a lot about my health. I do my best to eat right and continually set goals for myself. Sometimes it’s as simple as taking a walk after dinner. Other times, it’s climbing a mountain, like my journey this summer to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. I spent seven days walking up the mountain in Tanzania – all at a steep grade while carrying a backpack. It was the most physically challenging thing I have ever done...and I loved it.

Earlier this week, First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed schools that met the First Lady’s goal to double the number of participants in the HealthierUS School Challenge in a year to the White House to celebrate their achievement.

Watch First Lady Michelle Obama's full remarks here. Ed. Note: Cross-posted from the USDA blog. Given that many children eat as many as two meals a day at school, it’s pretty clear that schools have a vital role to play if we’re going to combat the disturbing rise in childhood obesity we’ve seen in recent years. Just as clear is that schools participating in USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge honored at the White House this week demonstrate the kind of deep commitment needed to create and maintain a healthy school environment. These schools are leaders that set an example for schools across the country.

On October 11 at precisely 3 pm, First Lady Michelle Obama kicked off the National Geographic Kids challenge to break the world record for the most people doing jumping jacks in a 24 hour period. Accompanied by local school children, the First Lady took to the South Lawn and led the children in an exercise that does everything the experts say we need to do to keep our kids healthy and fit. And best of all - the kids didn't need equipment, just enthusiasm!

Ed. Note: Cross-posted from the USDA blog We know that a healthy nation starts with healthy people. A good diet helps kids stay active and focused at school. And staying healthy can increase your productivity on the job. But sometimes families who want to make healthier eating choices are confused by conflicting messages, or don’t have time to do the research.

Watch First Lady Michelle Obama welcome the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team. Members of the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team and First Lady Michelle Obama took to the South Lawn yesterday afternoon for a Let's Move! soccer clinic with young players from Soccer Sisters United in Philadelphia and Prince William Courage Soccer Club in Woodbridge, Virginia. My fellow President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) members and I recently visited Miner Elementary School in Washington, D.C. led by Principal LaVonne Taliaferro-Bunch. The goal? To not only witness a model physical education (PE) program in action, but to experience it – in other words, walk the talk.

Since First Lady Michelle Obama’s announcement of Let’s Move! Child Care (LMCC) on June 8, 2011, nearly 1,300 participants have registered online and joined the fight against childhood obesity. Among the participants are child care providers who have committed to achieving best practice recommendations for the five LMCC goals—physical activity, screen time, food, beverage, and infant feeding—and trainers dedicated to providing technical assistance to child care providers participating in LMCC.
