More than 1.7 million school-age children in the United States have better access to fresh fruits and vegetables thanks to new salad bars donated to schools through Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools. Recently, the program partnership released results of a survey of recipient school districts. Among the benefits of school salad bars reported by school food service directors were increased student access to fresh fruits and vegetables and increased student participation in the school lunch program.

Yesterday, the First Lady joined Secretary Vilsack, school nutrition directors from across the country, and the same local Washington, D.C. students who participated in the garden planting in April, to harvest the summer crop from the White House Kitchen Garden. Due to inclement weather, the event was moved inside, but not without bringing the students down to the garden before the event to see the fruits of their labor. They were certainly impressed with the growth of the delicious foods they helped to plant.

The city of Los Angeles is known all around the world for Hollywood, Beverly Hills, celebrities as well as glitz and glamour. There are more than 125,000 millionaires and more than 20 billionaires in this city I now call home.   But the reality is there is still a big discrepancy in quality of life between the elite and the majority of students I serve as food services director at Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second largest school district in the country.
