Last Tuesday the City of Orlando celebrated the anniversary of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let's Move! Campaign with an incredible day full of events that was an unqualified success from all perspectives.

In honor of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! campaign, officials from the City of Bethlehem, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Education, Highmark Blue Shield and cheerleaders from the Philadelphia Eagles, along with students, parents, and teachers from Broughal Middle School, joined together on Friday, February 4, 2011 to celebrate the efforts undertaken by the city and school to promote physical activity and healthy food choices.

The two most direct ways to get involved in the Summer Food Service Program in your community are to either become a sponsor or a feeding site. What’s the difference you may ask? Being a sponsor means acting as the organizer for Summer Food Service sites. Sponsors manage, train, supervise and monitor all food service activities and locations where children can eat. They also maintain paperwork and submit claims for reimbursement.

Today, First Lady Michelle Obama delivered a major address focused on the efforts of the Let's Move! initiative to meet the needs of parents. Here are some excerpts from the speech, and you can watch also watch the full remarks below. On her experiences growing up: "My brother and I got pizza a few times a year – as a reward for good grades when report cards came out. No one in my family believed in eating out…especially not my grandmother. I will never forget the time when my brother and I begged her to get us takeout burgers and fries for lunch. We were shocked when she finally agreed. And as we sat excitedly waiting for our burgers to arrive…and I swear this is true…my grandmother brought out a can of peas. And, much to our horror, she promptly served us two scoops each. My grandma failed to grasp one of the key benefits of takeout for kids…and that was…no vegetables!"

At Housing and Urban Development (HUD) we have a saying, “You can’t be healthy if your house is sick.” And if your home is sick, it may affect your children and their chances of getting and staying in shape.
Today marks the first anniversary of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign, an initiative to end the epidemic of childhood obesity. One third of all children born in 2000 or later will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.
