The TODAY Show Debuts the Garden on the Go! with Fruits and Vegetables from the White House Kitchen Garden
Earlier this year, First Lady Michelle Obama kicked off her American Garden Tour, where she surprised students and community members throughout Washington, DC, and later, traveled to Burke County, Georgia and Newark, New Jersey to visit schools with inspiring garden programs. The TODAY Show has been following along throughout the First Lady’s visits, and Al Roker joined in the fun during Mrs. Obama’s stops in Georgia and New Jersey. Inspired by the White House Kitchen Garden and the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative, Al announced that TODAY would be planting their own garden.
In the spirit of the garden tour, TODAY wanted to take their garden on the road, so they decided to create their own mobile garden in a bright orange pickup truck! Al brought the truck to the White House South Lawn, where he joined Deb Eschmeyer, Executive Director of Let’s Move! and Senior Policy Advisor for Nutrition, and White House Executive Chef Cris Comerford. Together, they planted the truck bed using the same varieties of fruits and vegetables that are grown in the White House Kitchen Garden.
With their Garden on the Go, TODAY is taking their viewers on a journey from seed to sprout, visiting various locations across the country and showcasing fresh recipes using the produce they are growing. The truck bed garden exemplifies the idea that you don’t need thousands of square feet or even a big yard to grow your own tasty and nutritious food, but it can be grown anywhere from a window sill to a pickup truck.
