The 2015 Special Olympics World Games are being held from July 25 – August 2. It is the largest sports and humanitarian event in the world this year and is expected to draw 500,000 spectators to attend the nine-day competition, in addition to people tuning in to watch from across the globe. Athletes will compete in 25 sports, including aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, powerlifting, and sailing.

Mrs. Obama commended the competitors for their exemplary sportsmanship, strength, and support for one another. She continued to thank the athletes for the inspiration and hope they give the world and their ability to unite us all.

In referencing the millions of people who will be watching the World Games, the First Lady said, “I just want you to know that all those people won’t just be cheering for you, they’re going to be learning from you. They’re going to be inspired by you. And they’ll be reminded that at our core, we all want the same things – a sense of pride in who we are, and a belief that we can reach our dreams no matter what challenges we face.
