In many parts of the country, a winter chill is upon us.  Despite the cool temperatures, there are a multitude of activities offered throughout the National Park Service to get outside and get active!

We know that regular exercise out in nature improves kids’ physical and mental health. Let’s Move Outside! was created to help kids and their families take advantage of America’s great outdoors – which abound in every city, town and community.

For a deep winter experience, take a trek to a park like Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.  Rising above a scene rich with extraordinary wildlife, pristine lakes, and alpine terrain, the Teton Range stands monument to the people who fought to protect it. These are mountains of the imagination. Mountains that led to the creation of Grand Teton National Park where you can explore over two hundred miles of trails, float on the Snake River or simply enjoy the serenity of this remarkable place.

There’s also plenty to do in warmer climates, like the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in Southern California. Stretching from the Oxnard Plain to the Hollywood Hills and located to the west of Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Mountains offer myriad recreation and education opportunities. Experience famous beaches or explore any of the 500 miles of trails. The park abounds with historical and cultural sites from old movie ranches to Native American culture centers. What will you discover?

Don’t think you have to take a trip to find a great park though! Find a park in your neighborhood and take a hike through the snow.  Or, see if there are ranger-led snowshoe hikes at a National Park near you. You can find other National Park sites for winter activities at Or you can find additional opportunities on all types of public lands near you by visiting:

Last but not least, make sure to take advantage of this year’s Fee Free Days at a National Park near you and let’s all move outside!
