Before she was First Lady of the United States, Mrs. Obama was a Harvard Law student as well as a member of the school’s Harvard Legal Aid Bureau. In Harvard Law Bulletin’s winter edition, the First Lady discusses her work with Let’s Move! and reflects on how her time at Harvard Law has influenced her career since graduating in 1988.

“Both my classes and my time at the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau helped me understand how law and policy—properly understood and applied—can improve people’s lives, and I think my work with Let’s Move! is a good example of this,” Mrs. Obama said.

She continues to discuss the successes of Let’s Move! and how healthier eating and staying active are becoming the “new normal” for many of our country’s children.

“Back when we first started Let’s Move!, I worried about how much we could actually accomplish. The problem of childhood obesity was so complex, the statistics were staggering, and so many people were skeptical about our chances to make real change,” the First Lady said. “However, I’m happy to say that we’re now seeing results that we could never have imagined back when we were starting out.”

Mrs. Obama concludes by noting that now, more than ever, is the time to double down on our efforts to provide kids with the tools they need to reach their full potential—something she believes will remain a lifelong passion of hers.
