Nickelodeon and Partners Encourage Families to Get Up, Get Out and Go Play

This week, Nickelodeon, one of the world’s leading entertainment companies for kids, turned the “City that Never Sleeps” into a “City of Play,” hosting its biggest celebration of play ever! Leading up to the 10th Annual Worldwide Day of Play (WWDoP), on Saturday, September 21st, Nickelodeon is encouraging kids and their families to get up, get out and go play! For the last decade, during its Worldwide Day of Play celebration, Nickelodeon has gone dark for three hours, taking programming off the air and shutting down its websites for three hours from 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. (ET/PT).

For the 10th annual celebration, Nickelodeon is hosting multiple fitness-themed public events across New York City, with community members and organizations hosting smaller events across the country. In the week leading up to WWDoP, health and wellness-focused activities popped up across New York City at iconic locations, including Battery Park, Union Square Park and Times Square. To kick off the week of events, the city beamed “Nickelodeon Orange” as the Empire State Building lit up the skyline. Other events included fun family activities with NFL PLAY 60 on the deck of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum and Pier 86, as well as a mini triathlon with SpongeBob and Dora the Explorer at the Brooklyn Bridge Park.

The events and excitement will culminate tomorrow, September 21st, with the 10th Annual Worldwide Day of Play official celebration at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. The event will include tennis drills, dancing, stepping and double dutch, as well as appearances by Nickelodeon’s on air talent and characters including Big Time Rush and breakout star Ariana Grande. The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition will host a fun obstacle course in the Nick Jr. area of the park. As you can see above, Nickelodeon produced a promotional video to highlight First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Active Schools initiative that is airing on networks across the nation.

Millions of kids and families are expected to participate in thousands of WWDoP-themed events across the U.S. and abroad.
