MyPlate Turns 2!

Time flies when you are eating healthy! June 2nd marks the second anniversary of MyPlate, the food icon that reminds us to build a healthy plate with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean proteins, and fat-free or low-fat dairy at every meal. MyPlate is one of the easiest ways to learn about healthy eating. It's a friendly image for parents and kids to look at and recognize how to pile up their own plate. As First Lady Michelle Obama says:

“This is a quick, simple reminder for all of us to be more mindful of the foods that we’re eating and as a mom, I can already tell how much this is going to help parents across the country. When mom or dad comes home from a long day of work, we’re already asked to be a chef, a referee, a cleaning crew.  So it’s tough to be a nutritionist, too. But we do have time to take a look at our kids’ plates. As long as they’re half full of fruits and vegetables, and paired with lean proteins, whole grains and low-fat dairy, we’re golden. That’s how easy it is.”

Healthy eating with MyPlate starts with simple steps we can all take:

  • Focus on fruits
  • Vary your veggies
  • Make at least half your grains whole
  • Go lean with protein
  • Eat calcium-rich foods

Incorporating these simple steps into your meals allows you and your family to make healthier food choices. Earlier this year, the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) and major recipe websites teamed up to make it easier to find healthier recipes online through Pinterest, an online tool millions use to find inspiration for their lives. Each site indicated which of their recipes meet nutrition guidance from the US Department of Agriculture, meaning you can now find delicious MyPlate-inspired recipes on the sites you already visit for cooking inspiration. Thousands of recipes are featured on the My Plate Recipes Pinterest boards.
