Simple Tips: Parental Involvement in School Lunches
First Lady Michelle Obama participated in a WebMD Town Hall in Homestead, Florida, and answered questions from audience members about how American families can make healthy choices. Mrs. Obama encourages parents to take an active role in helping kids eat healthy and be active, as part of her Let’s Move! initiative.
The First Lady encourages parents to build relationships with their child’s school to ensure healthy options are available at lunchtime.
“Our kids need parents who are watching and concerned; school meals are critical to their overall development, and if there are any teachers out here, you know that if a child doesn't come to school ready to learn with a good set of nutrients in their system, they have a tough time focusing, and this ‑‑ their meals, their nutrition directly effects their success, not just in school, but in life. So we have to get them off to a good start.”
