Celebrating the 5th Annual National Walk at Lunch Day

Between work and other commitments, it can be hard to find time to exercise. That’s why the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) supports the National Walk @ Lunch Day sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. Last year, tens of thousands of walkers participated at work sites across the country. This year we hope to encourage even more participants to join us.

Walking is one of the simplest, safest, and most effective ways to get the regular exercise we all need. According to the American Dietetic Association, more than 70 percent of office workers eat at their desks between two and three times per week. This may mean that while you are reading this, you are also sending some emails and munching on your sandwich.

Through initiatives like Let’s Move! and the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (PCFSN) Americans are encouraged to adopt healthy lifestyles that include regular physical activity and good nutrition.

This Administration is committed to preventive care.  Walking regularly can help keep you healthy and prevent chronic disease. The PCFSN recommends a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day at least five days a week.

Here in DC, the walk will begin at 12:00pm at the Department of Health and Human Services. Join me and other Administration officials as we take time to make exercise a priority.

So lace up your walking shoes and grab your friends and coworkers. Join us for the Fifth Annual National Walk @ Lunch Day. Every step you take will improve your health. Don’t worry, you can bring your blackberry.
