Brownsville, Texas Joins Let’s Move!

The Texas border-town of Brownsville became the newest member of the Let’s Move Cities & Towns initiative, when Mayor Ahumada signed a proclamation this September. His message was clear: “We believe every kid has the right to a healthy childhood . . . Are you with us? LET’S MOVE!”

As a lower-income city with obesity rates above the national average (80% of Brownsville is either overweight or obese), we are especially excited about Brownsville because its people are setting an example for other cities and towns to follow. Regardless of income level, or how great the challenge may be, Americans are putting the health of their children at the forefront of their decisions.

Before joining Let’s Move! Brownsville began working on many of these initiatives through a strategic plan originally called “Imagine Brownsville” and now referred to as “Brownsville United.” The city partnered with the University of Texas at Houston’s School of Public Health in Brownsville to engage the community in a variety of ways. Brownsville hosted a “Brownsville’s Biggest Loser” event this spring, and is now home to an award-winning farmer’s market that promotes fresh produce and the use of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) funds. The city provides free exercise and nutrition classes, and continues to work with the University of Texas. Brownsville has ambitious hopes for the future, including a community garden and educational activities at local parks.

We hope that Brownsville’s efforts will inspire other cities and towns to join us. Encourage your Mayor to start moving with us!
