Chicago: Where Chefs Move to Schools Works!

Chicago has long been known as the City that Works. And a recent event related to the First Lady’s Chefs Move to Schools initiative proved that the city still lives up to its name.

On October 4th, Healthy Schools Campaign and Chicago Public Schools held their first Chef in the Classroom Day in which nearly 70 chefs visited schools across the Second City to connect with students and share lessons about healthy eating. A phenomenal success, the event was embraced by chefs, principals, and—most importantly—students!

At one school, Chef Liz Isaacs created a buffet of cut up veggies, turkey and cheese that could be dipped in balsamic vinaigrette or hummus. After students sampled the food and spoke with the chef, parents approached Liz in shock because their kids told them they loved the veggies.

Mark Bishop, of Healthy Schools Campaign, called the event more successful than the organization had even anticipated.

“Chefs were excited and felt connected, and principals were enthused, too,” he said. “This was an incredible beginning.”
