The Timothy Project

Judah House of Praise Church of the Living God is a faith based institution located in the rural area of Blue Mountain, MS, in the Tippah County School District. The Timothy Project served 25 African American students in grades 7-12 and one dropout. Using technology, the project focused on providing service-learning activities that addressed obesity, nutrition, leadership skills, and anti-social behavior.

Students researched nutrition, how obesity and physical fitness affect the human body, charted their Body Mass Index, and joined an online health club. A public awareness commercial on Diabetes and Cardio Vascular Disease was developed and aired on local TV stations in the Tippah and Union County viewing area. Through this project, students increased their academic performance in reading, writing, math, communication skills, and use of technology. The community learned about proper diets, healthy meal planning, the importance of daily exercise, and how health and nutritional education coincide.
