HHS: Putting Prevention to Work

Today, we announced a historic new investment in prevention and wellness in communities across the country.

Over the next two years $370 million will be invested tobacco and obesity-prevention programs in cities, towns, rural areas, and tribal communities across America.

Through the wonder of modern technology, our national event at HHS connected live with three communities who are receiving grants for this important announcement.

Dr. Frieden, Director of the CDC, joined us from the ground in Hamilton County, Ohio, where the Hamilton County Health District will use their award to make vending options in schools healthier, develop community gardens and improve access to recreation space.

Dr. Howard Koh, Assistant Secretary for Health joined us from Columbus, Indiana, where the state health department will use their award to make healthy food more affordable, support physical activity and recreation, and create healthier environments in schools.

And, last but not least, Surgeon General Regina Benjamin joined us from Orlando, Florida, where the Orange County Health department will tackle the tobacco use through a model tobacco prevention initiative that is truly a community-wide effort.
