Chicago Gets Active

Chicago knows how to move, as three-year old Demarius Johnson can attest. Last month, at Mayor Rahm Emanuel's pre-inaguration family celebration, Demarius learned how to shoot hockey goals with the Chicago Blackhawks' "shoot out" game. The Blackhawks (through the NHL) joined other Lets Move! partners at the celebration, encouraging kids to be active.

Earlier in the day, Demarius and nine-year old Monica Thompson learned how to jump rope like the pros with Chicago Run’s Ricardo Hernandez, who came on behalf of Building a Healthier ChicagoLet's Move! and Building a Healthier Chicago were also joined by Girls in the Game, who lead football drills, and  NeighborSpace who helped distribute seed packets and share gardening tips with Chicago families.

The rain that day slightly diminished participation, but it certainly did not diminish Lets Move! Chicago's enthusiasm for the city's future. Newly elected Mayor Rahm Emanuel has made health and wellness a priority, and his invitation to Lets Move! to take part in the celebration reflects this strong commitment the mayor intends to keep. In what is sure to be the first of many Mayoral/Lets Move! efforts to ensure the health and well-being of Chicago’s children and families.
